Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros because of an injury on her right ankle

Paris: Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros because of her ankle injury.

The WTA tweeted the 25-year-old's withdrawal from the clay-court Grand Slam, where she has never gone beyond the quarter-final stage in the French Open, on Tuesday night.

The injury on her right ankle that she picked up during training had seen the Dane pulling out of recent clay-court tournaments in Madrid and Rome had put her participation at Roland Garros in doubt.

The former world number one, who reached the US Open final in 2009 and 2014, has tumbled from a high of being fourth in the world last August to 34th in rankings.

Wozniacki last played on the tour since losing to Elina Svitolina in the last-32 of the Miami Open in March.

The French Open gets underway on Sunday.
