With the first anniversary of the Bullseye episode only a month away, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) stewards finally pronounced trainer Pesi Shroff guilty of 'vicarious' liability, but replaced the nine-month sentence announced earlier for the same offence with a monetary fine of Rs one lakh.

The decision was taken in a meeting held at the Mahalaxmi racecourse yesterday evening that lasted more than four hours.

Shroff will now have to once again go the board of appeal of the club that had sent the case back to the stewards when he had knocked on their doors to challenge the earlier punishment.

It may be noted that Shroff had filed a criminal case against "unknown" perpetrators for doping Bullseye as an attempt to tarnish his reputation, and the matter is still under investigation by the crime branch of Mumbai police.

When mid-day contacted Pesi Shroff, he confirmed the news, but added, "Paying or not paying the fine is not an issue, but how can there be a closure? We need to get to the bottom of this case."
