Not many strikers in this world would ever call their goal a fluke. Ira Sridhar from Bombay International (Babulnath) falls in a different breed.
She had no hesitation in labeling her goal a "fluke". The center-forward's solitary strike helped her side record their first victory in the MSSA inter-school girls under-16 tournament as they overcame JB Petit (Fort) 1-0 to muster three valuable points.
Interestingly, it wasn't one of those goals which came off an incredible free-kick or that involved some breath-taking skill, nor did it come off an acute angle. Instead, Sridhar scored off a corner, presented with the simplest of chances to score.
Standing right in front of the goal, Sridhar somehow got to the end of Kanika Basu's corner kick after which the ball trickled past JB Petit's diving custodian, Roshni Dadachanji and into the goal. "It was just a fluke. Kanika did the important work when she delivered a perfect corner. The ball fell in front of me and somehow I was able to guide it into goal," Sridhar later admitted.
