The 60,000 capacity crowd that turned up to watch the opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium yesterday, was in good spirits, cheering all contingents and enjoying the fanfare being dished out. However, they forgot the importance of good behaviour for a while when CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi stood up to deliver his speech. Even as the much-maligned official was acknowledging the dignitaries, one section of the crowd near the giant screen began booing him. The boos were picked by other stands at the stadium and spread like wild fire. The stoppage in booing could be attributed to a probable realisation of the fact that there were some international dignitaries including HRH Prince Charles on the stage too. Kalmadi was lucky yesterday.
