Purapalli Kashyap (right) produced a powerful exhibition of badminton by defeating a much higher ranked Rajeev Ouseph of England, 21-13, 21-17 yesterday. His win ensured a historic first win over England to set up a clash with top seed Malaysia in the mixed team event finals to be held today.
The victory justifies India's high standards in badminton, reached under the guidance of national coach Pullela Gopichand.
Twenty-year-old Kashyap, ranked 32 in the world, was chosen ahead of World No 17 and national champion, Chetan Anand. "I was under pressure, nervous and in a way, amazed when this responsibility was thrust on me by the coach. Everyone felt that I could defeat Ouseph as I had a more aggressive game," said Kashyap.
Saina Nehwal gave India the third win over Elizabeth Cann 21-18, 21-11. India will now look to clinch its first-ever gold in the mixed team format.
