Lee Westwood, trying to be the first Englishman to win a major golf title since 1996, eagled the par-5 second hole and birdied the third to seize a two-stroke lead at the 74th Masters yesterday.

The European No 1, who opened with a five-under par 67 on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club, leapfrogged a trio of rivals with his eagle and after three holes stood on eight-under par as late-starting leaders began their second round.

Fred Couples, the 50-year-old US star trying to become the oldest major champion, was on six-under through 13 holes along with countryman Ricky Barnes and England's Ian Poulter, who had finished 10 holes each.

Tom Watson, the 60-year-old US legend who was last year's British Open runner-up, endured a bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie start to his second round to stand at five-under with Phil Mickelson and South Korean Yang Yong-Eun, whose victory in the 2009 PGA Championship made him Asia's first men's major winner.
