Chess wizard Viswanathan Anand's mother Sushila Viswanathan has passed away in her sleep at age 79; Her last rites will be performed today at 10 am at Besant Nagar crematorium.

Chennai: Chess wizard Viswanathan Anand's mother Sushila Viswanathan has passed away in her sleep here.

She was 79. Her last rites will be performed today at 10 am at Besant Nagar crematorium.

She leaves behind her husband K Viswanathan, daughter and two sons of whom Anand is the youngest. Sushila taught Anand the basic moves of the game and accompanied him to various events.

PR Venkatarama Raja, President All India Chess Federation, expressed his condolences at the demise of Sushila Viswanathan.

Meanwhile, Anand expressed his gratitude to fans and well wishers for their support: "Thanks everyone for your prayers.

Tommorow will be a final good bye. It's been a tough day & I hope my dad copes with the loss. It's tough to let go of someone who knows you better than you will know yourself."
