Action from the India v Ireland World Cup quarter-final encounter in London yesterday. The Indian women lost 1-3 via shootout

In the end, the Indian women's hockey team was unable to make history and went down to Ireland in the quarter-finals of the World Cup via shootout. After the four quarters of the match finished goalless, the Indian women lost 3-1 in the ensuing shootout.

The Indian women's team's semi-final appearance in the inaugural edition of the World Cup in 1974 remains their best performance till date at the prestigious competition after Rani Rampal and her girls failed to match that feat yesterday.

The Irish girls had beaten India by a solitary goal earlier in the league phase of the tournament, and this knockout encounter was being viewed as a platform for the Indians to extract sweet revenge against the Women in Green, but it wasn't to be. In the shootout, Ireland scored through Upton Roisin, Meeke Alison and Chloe Watkins. For India, only Reena Khokhar manage to convert her attempt in the shootout.
