At the start of the year, we feel like trying every peach (yes, that's a Sylvia Plath reference), setting a hundred goals to feel more accomplished in the coming year, only to forget all about it in two days. We've now hit the midpoint of the year, but you don't need to wait for the next year to come along for a reset. Here are some creative resolutions you can commit to!
It's finally time to start working on the "ideal family member" resolution you made to keep yourself accountable to spend more time with your loved ones. Become a tourist in your own home - try to see everything with wonder and curiosity. Spend six months trying out your grandmother's recipes, maybe do some research on the history of your family name, indulge in old family gossip, maybe even peek through the jewellery boxes to assess your future inheritance. Don't worry we won't tell anyone.
Get out of your writing slump with this one, a step at a time. You don't have to write an entire novel, but let the writer in you seek the safe space it's been looking for. In the next six months, try writing letters - we're talking pen to paper - to the people that matter the most to you. Go and post it to them to keep yourself accountable.
Remember that promise you made to yourself about finally becoming artsy this year? It's time to get back on that goal. Watch one film from a different country every month. Set up your own calendar: July: Korean thriller, August: Iranian drama, September: anime, and so on. Your letterboxd account is going to love this.
Do you also have that list of never-ending cafes or restaurants that you are dying to go to? Make it a mid-year resolution (shhh, I won't tell anyone) and go try out unique dishes at these places. It can be anything from the street foods of Chowpatty or the bougie restaurants of Colaba. Experiment at least once a week and figure out your new favourite dish with a side of palate development.
The new Michael Jackson biopic is out, and all you feel like doing is moving! Well, you don't have to become Michael in a day, but what you can do is learn day by day. Over the next six months, learn one or multiple completely useless dance skills and moonwalk your way into completing another resolution. Now, at any dinner party, you have another way of outdoing the little kid's annual dance with your fabulous moves (P.S. you will have haters who are just jealous).
The library in your house is filled to the brim because of that yearly resolution to finish a certain number of books. Don't know where to start? Make it fun! Colour coordinate your shelves and make your way through them cover by cover. To make it much more exciting, start acting out your books, read the lines of each character in a different accent or use body language to make it a one man play. Don't give up on that book, it may take some time but it will be worth it.
