A guy I like has said he wants to go out with me, but I have not agreed because I don't believe it. He is good-looking and I know he can be with anyone he likes, so I don't know why he would ask me out. I am average looking and don't have what some of my friends do, in terms of looks or personality. I don't know if I am setting myself up for disappointment by going out with him, because I feel as if he will go out with me a few times and then dump me. I know I'm probably causing myself more harm by thinking the worst, but it also feels like a sensible thing because I don't want to embarrass myself in the future. What should I do?
You should do what you think is good for you in the present instead of assuming the worst about your future. If someone says they want to go out with you, why insult their intelligence as well as your own by presuming to know what they think about you? Anyone who goes out with you can lose interest after a date or two, and the same is true for you too because this good-looking guy may not be interesting enough as a person. Neither of you is obligated to be with the other or get into a long-term relationship, but any possibility comes into being only when you take the first step and get to know each other. Take a leap of faith and make decisions based on facts, rather than presumptions.
How can I start talking to someone without coming across as hopelessly in love? I want to project confidence and don't want to give my feelings away.
Treat the person as a human being you want to get to know, rather than an object. Try and empathise with who they are and focus on building a friendship first. Ask about their life and their interests. Take it slow and you will be fine.
