A collective batting effort helped Rizvi Springfield High School (Bandra) post 272 for four against Don Bosco High School (Matunga) on the opening day of the Giles Shield final at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

Opting to bat, Rizvi openers Abhinav Singh (85) and Owais Khan (47) provided an ideal start for the Bandra outfit by stitching a 123-run partnership. It wasn't easy for them to score runs early on as the duo of right-arm pacer Zaid Patankar and left-arm pacer Aaryaraj Nikam gave them a tough time in the middle with some skilful bowling.

In the 18th over, Zaid's outswinger nicked Abhinav's bat, but went through the narrow gap between wicketkeeper Arya Chowkidar and Bhushan Sawant at first slip. The Bandra outfit went into lunch at 95 for no loss. A minute into the second session, Abhinav tried to loft skipper Sahil Jadhav only for Soumil Mhatre to drop a regulation catch at mid-off. The opener failed to capitalise and edged Harsh Mendon to wicketkeeper Arya. The right-handed batsman smashed 17 fours during his 114-ball knock.

Mohit Tanvar joined Owais in the middle and they put on a 23-run partnership for the second wicket before left-arm spinner Chris D'Britto trapped Owais in front of the wicket for 47. Off the very next ball, Chris clean bowled new batsman Prince Singh with a delivery which drifted in to the right-handed batsman. Rizvi were now in trouble at 146 for three. Owais Shaikh then joined Mohit at the crease. The duo played sensibly and steadied the Bandra team, adding 81 for the fourth wicket.

Don Bosco skipper Sahil put an end to the partnership with a throw from the boundary that saw Shaikh fall short of the crease. The right-handed batsman scored 47 which included six fours and a six. Meanwhile, Mohit completed his half-century with a boundary towards square leg off Aaryaraj. The Bandra outfit ended the day at 272 for 4 with Mohit batting on 54 and Tejas Chalke on 29.
