That the night would be an extension of women's causes was evident early on when Kristen Bell was announced as the first ever female host of the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) in its 24-year history, on Sunday. Dubbing herself as the unofficial "first lady" at the coveted night in Los Angeles, Bell, who has vociferously supported the Time's Up movement, opened the night stating, "We are living in a watershed moment and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let's make sure that we're leading the charge with empathy and diligence..."

As calls for change in the industry became the underlying theme of the night, most of the awards – including all the 13 acting categories - were presented by the women of Hollywood. The gala, which marks achievements in film and television, saw, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri receive the nod for Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Television show This Is Us was a surprise winner for Best Drama Ensemble, beating Emmy winner The Handmaid's Tale.

Hopping on stage in a baseball cap, Morgan Freeman received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Rita Moreno. "This is beyond honour, this is a place in history," he said. Flu-stricken Nicole Kidman took on ageism when she arrived on stage to collect her gong for Big Little Lies. The nod marked her first SAG win. In her speech, Kidman praised fellow nominees, as well as other women, whose performances have inspired her. "I want to thank you all for your trailblasing performances you've given over your career and how wonderful it is that our careers can go beyond 40 years, because 20 years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives," she said. Joining Kidman was Gary Oldman, who took home his first SAG for The Darkest Hour.
