Box office: 'Secret Superstar' and 'Golmaal Again' bring Diwali bonus for Bollywood
Aamir Khan's low-budget drama 'Secret Superstar' and Ajay Devgn's multi-starrer comic franchise 'Golmaal Again' crack it at box office, industry relieved
After the box-office drought that has been 2017, the industry had pinned its hopes on Diwali releases, Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar, to bring the much-needed cheer. Fortunately, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn's films have set the cash registers ringing. Secret Superstar, which hit the screens on Thursday, registered collections of Rs 22.75 crore over its three-day run.
However, Rohit Shetty's comedy that released a day after (October 20) raced ahead of the Zaira Wasim-starrer to collect Rs 33 crore on its first day, thus registering the year's second highest opening for a Bollywood film. The Tabu and Parineeti Chopra starrer amassed R58.51 crore over its two-day run.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh is upbeat about how the small-budget Secret Superstar has maintained its momentum despite clashing with Golmaal Again. "The fact that Aamir Khan is associated with it, is giving it weight. It's holding well despite the Golmaal wave, especially in metropolitan cities."
Distributor Akshaye Rathi is glad that the fourth instalment of the Golmaal franchise has aped the success of its previous parts. "By the time the weekend comes to a close, it will have crossed the 100-crore mark." He adds that Khan's film may not have the numbers of its competitor, but is still a winner. "It's made on a budget of only R14 crore. So, collection of Rs 22.75 crore so far is an achievement."
