The memorial to Chapekar Brothers is located in the city but it seems that the contribution of the brothers to the freedom struggle have almost been forgotten.
Freedom fighters Damodar Hari Chapekar and his brothers Balkrishna and Vinayak got their inspiration from Lala Lajpat Rai.
u00a0“In June 1897, the three brothers set out to kill British officer Walter Charles Rand who had handled the plague in Pune in a high-handed manner,” informed historian Mandar Lawate. He added that they had made a plan to kill Rand but due to a misunderstanding in the code word, another police officer Lt Charles Ayrest was shot by Balkrishna Chapekar.
u00a0“Later the Chapekar brothers and two accomplices were charged with the murders in various roles, as well as the shooting of two informants and an attempt to shoot a police officer and they were hanged till death,” adds Lawate. The memorial is at Ganeshkind Road and needs to be handled better.
