For a food-loving city such as Pune, it is strange that there are few options of an exceptional chocolate menu. It could be due to the price-consciousness of Puneites who seem happy to spend their moolah at up-town nightclubs but cringe at buying an expensive dessert. There is hope, though, in the form of Chocolate Leaf, which has opened two outlets at Wanowrie and Karve Road. It has been set up by three young girls, one of whom whips up magic in the bakery while the other two manage the stores.

Walk in on a regular day and their shelves are not loaded with pastries. They have a select few, mostly chocolate and a couple of non-chocolate desserts, on offer. They also accept customised orders. Since they claim their products are made from 100 per cent whole wheat, we gave our guilt a day off. We began with a Walnut Brownie (Rs 35). Wrapped in cling film, we didn't have high hopes for it. But it was moist and perfect, and actually elevated our afternoon coffee ritual. Next, we tried their popular recommendation -- the Dutch Truffle (Rs 55). It had been a long while since we had a pastry whose sponge layers were as moist and whose ganache did it so much justice.

We gave ourselves one more day for another trail. The next day, we opted for their Coffee Mousse (Rs 60). A glassful that looked like it belonged to the land of the tiramisu it came with a layer of drunk chocolate sponge at the base, followed by a sinful coffee-flavoured mousse and topped with cream. The whipped cream was far too much in quantity for our liking -- it meant more empty calories -- but the mousse was perfect.

To be fair, we had to opt for a non-chocolate dessert and we chose the pick of the day -- Peach Pastry (Rs 55). What looked like a rather sad pineapple pastry, such as often found in old Pune bakeries, was actually quite good. The fresh cream layers that sandwiched the really moist sponge, accentuated the taste of the peach cream.

Chocolate Leaf also retails various types of biscuits, cookies and breads. But their specialty lies in their desserts, especially the ones that they make to order. Among them, they have a range of alcohol-based cakes. We vouch for the Chocolate Cointreau Mousse Cake. You should head to them if you are planning a birthday party.
