From the moment we have walked into make-up artist Vardan Nayak’s Goregaon apartment, his Instagram notifications have been going off every two minutes. The full throttle pinging is a response to the new feature ‘Ask Me Anything’, where story-watchers can ask questions, which can be answered publicly in a subsequent post. And, what most followers want to know is, how to nail Janhvi Kapoor’s dewy look from her upcoming film Dhadak. “Tried to answer as many as I could. Let’s do this next time,” he signs off.

The 33-year-old has only an hour or two to respond to our questions before heading to Juhu for a movie promotional event with Kapoor, and then fly to Kolkata for another. “It’s delirious, but I love it,” gushes Nayak, whose most recent assignment was Isha Ambani’s ethereal look at brother Akash Ambani and fiancé Shloka Mehta’s recent engagement. “I started my career with Mickey Contractor and assisted him in over 250 projects. He’s my mentor,” says Nayak, who started taking up assignments as a freelance make-up artist in 2012.

Today, his resume includes names such as Alia Bhat in 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Anushka Sharma in Sanju and Jab Harry Met Sejal, and Jacqueline Fernandez in the song Allah Duhai Hai from Race 3. “Frankly, for me, make-up is not about changing the personality of the person. It’s about making the skin tone even,” he says.

Janhvi Kapoor’s fresh faced look
I call it the clean look where you want to appear naturally radiant without allowing the makeup to become greasy. In Dhadak, Jhanvi looks dewy, which is what was required. It’s also most celebrities’ ‘airport’ look. Prep the skin with argon oil. Take a little bit and apply it on your face.

It helps moisturise and ensures that the foundation stays for a long time. Then, move on the foundation cream on the T zone and then spread it all over the face. I then use an invisible make-up powder for the airy and bare skin finish. Then, treat the contours with contouring cream. I prefer using coral and chocolate so that the skin doesn’t look flat. Next step: Apply a peach blush with a thick brush.

For the eyes, I would recommend using a skin colour pencil on the waterline just to perk up the eyes. Use any nude colour under the eyes just to make a separation between your waterline and foundation. Use a highlighter to diffuse any dark circles.

You can use your fingers moving from inner corner to outer corner. Use mascara to add volume to your lashes, and then pinch them with a lash tool to wind them up. For the lips, again use a nude colour or any skin colour that doesn’t alter the original colour too much.

The most important in this entire exercise are the eyebrows because perfectly groomed brows can transform your face. Dip in your angled brush in a brown or black powder colour depending on your complexion and work in short, upward strokes. You then seal it with a gel, if you wish.

Anushka Sharma’s smokey eyes
THIS one is, by far, my all-time favourite look. It suits everybody, and can work on any kind of hairstyle and is very simple. To keep the eyelids and creases oil-free, gently apply a primer on your lids and under your eyes. Pick a smokey eye shade of your choice — black, grey, brown, etc. Take a black eye pencil and trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer.

Then, line your lower lashes. Use the liner on top by using a smudge brush. You can even use your fingers. Blend your shadow upward and outward into the crease of your eyelid. Ensure it’s not too thick. Blend well. Dab invisible powder on the under eye area. Use lots of mascara. Finish the look by using a gold highlighter above the eye to give it a classy look. Use a peach blush on the contours, but never pink because it takes away the focus. The idea here is to not look pretty, but smouldering.

Jacqueline Fernandez’s winged eyes
NOTHING makes the eyes look more dramatic than winged eyes. Jacqueline has sported this look in Race 3 and on several reality shows. It is glamorous and can work well for a party. Choose an eyeliner you are comfortable with so that your hands are steady. Getting the swoosh is tricky but there are several hacks to do it. One is to take a card and then put it on the corner of your eyes.

Draw a sharp straight thin line in the angle of your wings. Start from the outer corner of your eyes to towards your eyebrow. You can also use your other hand to gently pull your eyelid to create a nice and clean line. If you are tying your hair up in a tight bun, you can extend it slightly more to give it an Oriental look.
