A 49-year-old police constable tried to commit suicide at the Tilak Nagar police station by consuming fabric whitener, over alleged harassment from the hands of the station in-charge.

The constable, identified as Prabhakar Desai, has been hospitalised and is presently out of danger. The senior police authority has ordered an inquiry in the matter.

Prabhakar, who was attached with the Tilak Nagar police station, came to station on Monday afternoon and consumed some cloth washing chemical and collapsed. Around an hour later his colleagues found him lying on the floor and rushed him to the Rajawadi hospital.

Sources say that Desai was frustrated over odd duties being regularly given to him on the instructions of senior inspector Vijay Khaire.

Khaire is believed to be upfront, straightforward and strict in nature when it comes to work. Sources also said that Desai had an argument with Kahire's orderly in the past over some issues.

Another source said that a suicide note has also been found from the spot. However, the cops are not revealing details about it.

Following the incident, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Deonar division) Rauf Shaikh has been ordered to conduct an inquiry into the matter, said Deputy Commissioner of Police zone VI Nishandar Sangramsinh.
