A Hapless United States of America were thrashed 1-3 in their final Group 'A' encounter by Colombia at the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul yesterday. With a vital win under their belt, Los Cafeteros, who lost their opening match to Ghana (0-1), qualify for the knockout stage after earning three vital points to jump to second spot in Group 'A'. The Stars and Stripes, placed third with six points, qualify for Round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams.

In a riveting contest, Colombia grabbed an early lead in the third minute due to some sloppy American defence. A long throw by Andres Cifuentes on the far left flank landed straight to Juan Vidal, who was just outside the post and flicked it for a goal. USA skipper Josh Sargent fed George Acosta with a beautiful through ball, but the striker's shot went inches wide of the right hand post. After pressing hard, they finally earned the equaliser in the 24th minute when Andrew Carleton made a brilliant run on the right flank and pierced the Colombian wall.
He smartly assisted Acosta and made no mistake to net it home as both sides went into the breather 1-1. Colombia were boosted by goals from Juan Penaloza (67th min) and Deiber Caicedo (87).
