A gritty unbeaten century from skipper Sahil Jadhav prevented Don Bosco High School (Matunga) from being steamrolled by Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) as the latter won the Giles Shield U-14 tournament on better run quotient at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday. Sahil's 150, which included 19 boundaries in 329 balls in a six-hour stay in the middle, helped Don Bosco post 331 for nine on the third and final day in reply to Rizvi's mammoth 495-8 declared.

After losing four wickets for 53 on the penultimate day on Tuesday, Sahil and his partner Soham Nalavade began cautiously. But Rizvi's off-spinner Mohit Tanvar soon ended the 23-run partnership with Soham by edging one to wicketkeeper Owais Khan. Medium pacer Umar Khan added one more to his tally when he claimed the wicket of new batsman Shubham Shinde (2) as Don Bosco reeled at 87-6.
Skipper Sahil though impressed with his fighting spirit as he reached his half century with a single through the covers off left-arm spinner Nishit Balla. He reached his century with a sweep shot for a single. "I wanted to keep the scoreboard ticking. We wanted to give Rizvi a tough fight. My strategy was to be watchful initially before playing my shots," said Sahil.
The southpaw played three elegant cover drives off Rizvi skipper Abhinav Singh in the fourth over after lunch. Sahil found an able ally in Nutan Goyalâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088(52) as the Bosco duo stitched a 99-run partnership for the seventh wicket. However, Bosco again lost wickets in quick succession in the form of Nutan and Arya Chowkidar (3) as they ended the second session at 234 for eight. Sahil then rebuilt Bosco's innings with No. 10 batsman Bhushan Sawant (54), adding 91 runs for the ninth wicket. Sahil and last batsman Ayush Sawant (19) put up an unbeaten 37-run partnership to resist Rizvi's charge.
Rizvi's off-spinner Umar was the pick of the bowlers with 4-84, while Faaz Khan, Mohit, Abhinav and Tejas Chalke claimed a wicket each. Meanwhile, Mohit was awarded the best batsman of the tournament for his 496 runs in four matches, while VN Sule Guruji's (Dadar) left-arm spinner Atharva Bhosale bagged the best bowler of the tournament award for claiming 23 wickets in three matches.
