It may boast of getting an AIIMS-like makeover shortly, but is Sassoon hospital to be trusted with even the most basic of emergencies? Apparently not, if one goes by the choice of hospital of a top Sassoon doctor when he developed chest pain.

Shaming the claims of Sassoon hospital as one that offers top-notch super-speciality services, Dr P S Pawar, medical superintendent and second-in-command at the government facility, got himself admitted to Jehangir Hospital after he developed chest pain on March 5.

Speaking to MiD DAY, a source at Sassoon said Pawar's decision came as a shock and a slap on the face for the hospital as the cardiac department had been projected as one of the hospital's most advanced centres.

"Pawar underwent an angioplasty at the N M Wadia Unit of Jehangir Hospital and showed that he didn't have much faith in the hospital doctors," said the source.

When asked about his decision, Pawar admitted that he had spent lakhs of rupees at Jehangir Hospital till his discharge on March 11. But he refused to comment on why he didn't get operated at Sassoon in spite of all facilities being available there as well.

"My doctor has advised me to speak less," said Pawar, refusing to comment on the issue.

'Double standards'
Dinesh Kuchekar, union leader, Nursing Department Action Committee, said, "Pawar's act was shameful and showed his double standards. Firstly, he showed poor faith in our hospital's cardiac department and hurt our image. Secondly, he was the one who used to refuse leave and dues to our colleagues unless they got treated at Sassoon hospital. This shows his double standards."
