India cricketers like Ishant Sharma and Gautam Gambhir were shocked when a man yesterday drove his car onto the pitch during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh at the Air Force ground in Palam. A major security breach left players and officials dumbfounded.

The perpetrator, identified as Girish Sharma, is, "suffering from depression and is under treatment," Sharma's father claimed.
Ishant, Gauti shocked A picture has emerged of the incident where Gambhir, Ishant and Manan Sharma were seen standing with the car parked on the centre of the 22-yard strip. Ishant sarcastically tweeted: "Drive in theater just progressed to #DriveIN match. Shocking scene in between #RanjiTrophy match today witnessed with @GautamGambhir."

Sharma tried to swerve his car twice on the 22-yard strip before he was stopped. It is learnt that the main gate of the Air Force ground, which only allows entry of cars after proper checks, remained open with the security not in his position. There was also a notice outside the gate which read: 'Defence area -- trespasser will be shot.'

Sharma entered the complex and instead moving towards the designated parking lot, which is behind the main pavilion, he took a detour entering from the Palam B complex into the field of play and took couple of rounds of the pitch before trying to leave the ground.

No complaint yet
At the time of going to press, Delhi Cantonment's Investigating Officer Virendra Singh told mid-day that no official complaint has been lodged by either the Air Force officials or the cricket authorities.

However, it is learnt that he is likely to be charged for illegal intrusion into a defence establishment.
