The deceased, identified as Parmeshwar Hanumant Dhavre (23), a tempo driver, had poked fun at his neighbour Rajesh Dattatray Rithe (30), after which he took offence and attacked him.

Rithe was later arrested on charges of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and produced in court on Tuesday. He is remanded in police custody till November 3.

Satish Govekar, police inspector at Dattawadi police station, said “The accused and Dhavre had a dispute on Monday night. Dhavre was making fun of Rithe over the theft of 190 grams of gold from his house. He teased Rithe, saying that he could do nothing to trace the thieves.”

“After Dhavre’s provocation, Rithe got angry and strangled him with a belt. Later, he smashed Dhavre’s head with a stone. Dhavre died because of the serious injuries sustained due to the assault,” added Govekar.u00a0
