London: Manchester United suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough as the latter scored 3-1 in a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the quarterfinals of the Capital One Cup.

Middlesbroughs midfielder Grant Leadbitter scored the first penalty to put his side in lead before forward David Nugent missed the other chance.


Stewart Downing and Ben Gibson were the other goal-scorers as they helped their side to increase their lead, Goal.com reported


It was United midfielder Andreas Pereira who scored the lone penalty for his side.

Meanwhile, Liverpool also made it to the quarterfinals as Nathaniel Clyne smashed a match-winning goal for his side to beat Bournemouth 1-0 in League Cup clash.

Middlesbrough will play against Everton, while Liverpool will lock horns with Southampton for the semi-final berth on December 1.
