The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is likely to postpone the inauguration of its Kandivli recreation centre that was scheduled for Sunday.

MCA may postpone inauguration of Kandivli recreation centre

Yesterday, MCA officials were in discussion with various state government authorities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Police over the inauguration issue. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has been invited for the function.u00a0

The structure is yet to receive an Occupation Certificate (OC). The BMC has said it will be illegal if the MCA goes ahead with its inauguration plans without receiving the OC.

The construction has also run into controversy after Mumbai’s mayor Sunil Prabhu accused the MCA of flouting norms and “cheating” Mumbaikars in the name of promoting cricket among the masses.

“When the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allotted MCA the land for setting up a cricket academy, it went ahead and constructed a five-star cricket club. Is this not cheating the people of Mumbai?” Prabhu said in a statement. Shiv Sena members have demanded the land to be seized.

A source said the MCA is yet to send the invitation cards of Sunday’s function into print. u00a0“It is not clear whether we are going ahead with the inauguration function.

A final decision will be taken only after the president (Ravi Savant) returns from London. As of now the chances of sticking to the plan is 50-50,” he said.
