A 70-year-old man lost Rs 4.94 lakh to unidentified robbers, while he was travelling in a BEST bus from Peder Road to Fort.

Following the incident, he went to the Azad Maidan police station and registered a complaint against two persons, who were staring at him during the journey. The victim, Raghuram Aichal, suspects that the duo kept a watch on him and later stole the cash.

Aichal, who works for Damani Shipping Private Limited, looks after the company's records and financial transactions. On July 5, the company gave him three cheques to withdraw from three different accounts. After withdrawing Rs 8.94 lakh, he boarded the bus from Peddar Road to reach office.

"When I boarded the bus, I spotted two people staring at me. I had kept the money in a black bag, which was hanging from shoulder. Suddenly, I felt a jerk from behind. I didn't bother, as it was a normal thing in a crowded bus," said Aichal.

After he got down at Fort, he found the bag's chain open and some of the cash missing. He informed his employer and filed a complaint at Azad Maidan police station. "We have registered a case under Sec 379 (theft) of IPC. We will also enquire with the driver and conductor if necessary," said a police officer.
