The brother-in-law of underworld gangster Chhota Shakeel was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch in an extortion case from 2004 recently. According to Crime Branch sources, the accused, Salim, was hiding in south Mumbai’s Arab Gulli area. The cops said he was threatening builders to extort money.

In September 2004, a Mahim-based doctor received international calls and the caller demanded Rs 25 lakh. The caller threatened to kill the doctor if the amount was not paid. The doctor complained to the Mahim police station and investigations started. A trap was laid and the amount was negotiated for R10 lakh. When two accused came to the spot to collect the money, they were arrested by the cops. A few more arrests took place, but Salim remained wanted.

On Tuesday the Crime Branch got a tip off about the accused operating in south Mumbai’s Nagpada area. A team was formed and he was arrested. Salim was produced in the court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till March 8.
