Mumbai Crime: Harassed by drunkard, 13-year-old girl sets self ablaze

Harassed over a long period by a 33-year-old drunkard, who would show her obscene videos, a 13-year-old girl attempted suicide on Wednesday. The accused had threatened her not to tell anyone about what he did.

The victim, a resident of Utkarsh Nagar in Bhandup, is the daughter of a domestic help. Taking advantage of the fact that her mother was not home for large portions of the day, Sameer Ghumne (33), who lives in the same area, would harass her and show her obscene videos. This was always followed by threats, which kept the girl from being able to tell anyone about what was happening.

Unable to take it anymore, the teenager poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze on Wednesday, while her mother was away. An officer from Bhandup police station said, “The girl suffered 45% burns and was rushed to Sion Hospital. She is now stable. After the girl was admitted, the mother found a suicide note in their house, which is how the harassment came to light.”

A case was registered and Ghumne was arrested yesterday. “We will interrogate him and find out for how long he had been harassing the teenager, and how many other girls he has done this to. He is unemployed and is an alcoholic.”
