Mumbai Crime: Rapist threatened pregnant 15-year-old to keep mum

A 15-year-old girl was raped over a period of eight months in Wadala and forced to remain silent by her former boyfriend and his mother. The accused had violated her 15 times during this period.

The girl had turned aloof, and when her mother noticed her strange behaviour, she took the girl to an NGO (for women and child welfare) on December 9. There, the girl fainted and was rushed to Nair Hospital.

The doctors declared that she was three months pregnant. The girl then narrated the ordeal to her mother. An FIR was lodged and the accused Deepak Solanki (19) was arrested from his Pant Nagar residence.

The girl is currently awaiting a Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP). However, police officials from the Wadala TT police station — who are investigating the matter — have alleged that their investigation has been stalled since the hospital is delaying the girl’s MTP.

The girl was temporarily shifted to Kasturba Hospital on Monday, since she was suffering from chicken pox. She was moved back to Nair Hospital later.

Delay in surgery
The cops say that the delay in the treatment is resulting in a delay in the DNA tests that could ascertain the charges.

“Had the girl come to us first, we would have probably chosen Sion Hospital as it’s the centre for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases, and also the treatment is speedy. The doctors here are yet to conduct the MTP which is also resulting in the growth of the foetus,” said one of the officers.

Her ordeal
In her statement, the girl told the police officials that she met Deepak through his sister, who is a friend of hers. The girl had visited Deepak’s house during Ganapati last year, where she met him for the first time. They gradually fell in love.

“After that, the duo had sexual intercourse for over 15 times over a period of eight months, which resulted in her pregnancy. When the boy’s mother Sharda came to know about their affair, she threatened the girl,” said Sunil Kadam, an investigating officer from Wadala TT Police station.

He added, “But when her mother came to know about the relationship, and realised that it’s affecting her daughter, she chose to visit a local NGO, instead of coming to us.”

Booked
While Deepak was arrested earlier, his mother Sharda was arrested on Monday as she was at her native place. The accused have been booked under POCSO sections 4, 6, 8 and 17 for committing sexual offence against a minor. Deepak has also been booked under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Hospital says
When mid-day contacted Doctor Asha Dalal, head Nair Hospital’s gynaecology department, she said that she is on leave and hence does not have the details regarding the case. The treating gynaecologist at the hospital refused to share any details.
