When Bombay played it cool
Here's a history lesson you wouldn't mind being a part of. This diarist thinks so, especially after dozing over countless hours of insipid lectures back in school.

Dr MD David, former professor and head, department of History at the University of Mumbai has just released Torch bearers of the Deccan blazing up the Northern Skies, which lucidly explains how regions south of the Narmada were also affected by the 1857 rebellion.

We found the chapter on Bombay insightful - from Lord Elphinstone and Charles Forjett's role in keeping the city safe to the panic among Europeans as well as how residents ensured communal harmony in the city was intact. Didn't someone say that we haven't learnt our lessons from history?

Bollywood is loving this kitchen
"In the last 48 hours I've found myself at Farah Khan's home celebrating her birthday. Only to wake up the next day and celebrate Hrithik Roshan's birthday at his house tonight.

Farah Khan party

No, they didn't call me for my charming company... but, instead for the 48 hour marinated Raan. Am I dreaming? The Bohri Kitchen (TBK) you haven't made me into a millionaire (yet) but you're giving me priceless experiences, and for that Thaaaaank you!"

Hrithik Roshan birthday

This was the post that CEO (Chief Eating Officer) and founder of TBK, Munaf Kapadia (top, right, in green shirt) posted on social media after consecutive days saw the home-kitchen inspired menu being the talk of the town at two of Bollywood's big birthday bashes. Home is where success is, clearly.

Another first for Tanvi
A pioneer's path is fraught with difficulties, but when it comes to a woman, the challenges take on a new meaning, thanks to the hostility of society towards one half of its population. To commemorate the achievements of those who became the first women to excel in their fields, the Ministry of Women and Child Development will be hosting First Ladies at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 20.

Among the achievers is Tanvi Shah, who became the first Indian woman to win a Grammy, for her Spanish lyrics for Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire). She has also been chosen to compère the event. "I was so pleasantly surprised when I got a call from the ministry...I look forward to this being the platform for many women to showcase their talent and be encouraged," Shah told this diarist.

Kicking gender bias
Gurinder Chadha's Bend it like Beckham had put the spotlight on issues that Indian girls face, be it to make round chapatis or kick a football. The OSCAR Foundation supported by the British Deputy High Commission is keen to change this perception with the Kick Like a Girl project.

Through it, over 90 young girls from marginalised communities across Mumbai, Thane and Jharkhand are being empowered to challenge gender disparity. The girls were also trained in team building, discussions on reproductive health and personality development.

Only half a laddoo, please!
We love it when our netas drop their 'politically correct' dialogues and get candid about their lives and times with some banter. One of our favourites who does this from time to time and doesn't hesitate to share it on social media is suave MP Shashi Tharoor.

Recently, he drew our attention to how everyone around him was getting sugar-conscious by citing the example of how feeding laddoos to party workers has become an awkward experience since no one wanted an entire laddoo any more. Talk about sweet endings of a different kind!
