Mumbai: 'Harassed' 18-yr-old maid found hanging in Goregaon highrise

Deceased's sister alleged in her statement to the Mumbai police that the domestic help was being harassed by her employer for several months

An 18-year-old domestic help allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her employer's residence in Goregaon (west).

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in flat number 203 in Garden Estate building, when the owner and his wife were not in the house.

Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan resides in the same building, and last year, his domestic help had committed suicide (Read more).

The Bangur Nagar police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR ) following a preliminary enquiry. Police said that they will also record statements of the flat owner and neighbours, to ascertain the exact reason behind the suicide.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sufiya Khatul, who was working as a domestic help in the Garden Estate building since the past several months.

The incident took place at 4 pm when the family was out; it came to light when the owner of the flat returned and knocked the door several times but did not get any response from inside. He informed the neighbour and the door was opened using a spare key. That's when they found Khatul hanging from the ceiling fan.

Khatul's sister alleged in her statement to the police that the deceased's employer had been harassing her for several months.

She also alleged that Khatul had informed her about her harassment by her employer.

Police are checking Khatul's call records, said a police officer from Bangur Nagar police station.
