Mumbai: Over 500 BMC workers yet to receive salaries

Over 500 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers from the D ward have complained that they have not received salaries for the past few months, while others said they have received irregular salaries. This comes just months after the civic body introduced the biometric attendance system. The D ward includes areas like Malabar Hill and Tardeo.

The workers had gone to Sangli and Kolhapur to carry out relief work. Despite repeated complaints, their issue has not yet been resolved. BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi had declared an additional month’s salary for the staff – who carried out relief measures – which they have received.

A BMC official, on condition of anonymity, said the pending amounts will be deposited in their accounts with next month's salary.

The staff complained that after the civic body introduced the new attendance system, they started receiving irregular salaries. In September, a few of them received only Rs 290.

Sanjay Gaikwad, a BMC worker, got only  Rs 4,022, instead of Rs 21,000. He said the salary was deducted as he was marked absent while he was in Sangli.

"I have not received salary for the past nine months. Despite repeated complaints, there has been no improvement," Gaikwad said. Two other workers, Manoj Makwana and Suhas Kambale, who were part of the relief team, also haven't got their full salaries for September.

Pravin Manjalkar, member of Municipal Majdoor Union, said, "The workers who went to flood-hit districts received extra salary. But what about the others who haven't received their regular income? Deputy municipal commissioner of general administration has called for a meeting on Friday and assured us that the remaining salaries will come with the next salary."
