Mumbai University vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh may be asked to step down from his position, after he allegedly expressed his inability to declare the results before the July 31 deadline to governor and chancellor of the varsity Vidyasagar Rao. Deshmukh's tenur thus far has been seen as controversial.

According to The Times of India, 52-year-old Deshmukh has completed 2 years out of his 5-year stint as vice-chancellor of the Mumbai University. A senior BJP cabinet member said Deshmukh might be asked to step down as vice-chancellor, in case he does not voluntarily resign after the results are declared, in order to preserve the credibility of the Mumbai University.

Governor Vidyasagar Rao is reportedly upset at the university's failure to declare the results before the July 31 deadline. The 45-day deadline was set under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act. In a review meeting on July 4, held in the presence of additional chief secretary (higher and technical education) S J Kunte, Rao directed Deshmukh to stick to the deadline as it would affect the careers of the students. In a statement issued by Raj Bhavan, Rao asked the vice-chancellor to motivate teachers to achieve timely declaration of results by July 31.

This was in response to the varsity's request to be granted five to six more days in August for the announcement of commerce and law results. Registrar MA Khan says non-instructional days may have to be declared by Mumbai University if assessment is not done by July 27.
