Thane: A couple from Mumbra was arrested by crime branch police officials for allegedly cheating a Mumbra housewife and relieving her of gold ornaments and cash amounting to around Rs 30 lakh, a police official said here today.
A senior police inspector stated according to a release issued here tonight that Hanifa Ahmed Patni (54) who resided Mumbra was approached by the couple who told her that some of her family members had done some blackmagic on her due to which she was always falling sick.
They asked her to purchase a blessed stone and told her that if she failed to purchase it immediately, she would die. They also convinced her to get "treated" by one Hazrat Baba in Delhi and asked her to make use of a "treated" lemon, the police official said.
They took Rs 25 lakh from her in cash as well as her gold ornaments.
After the victim lodged a complaint with the Mumbra police on Wednesday against the couple identified as Rubina Javed Shaikh (39) and Javed Kasam Sheikh (54), the Mumbra police registered an offence against them under Section 420 and Section 406 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code, besides Section 3(2) of the Blackmagic Eradication Regulations of 2013, the police official said.
The arrested couple were produced before the local magistrate today who remanded them to police custody until October 1, the police official said.
So far the police has recovered Rs 35,000 from the arrested couple, the release said.
