Running out of reasons to exist, this third time cinematic event has the World Champions, The Bellas, splitting, going out of jobs and then reuniting for a US Overseas tour. And they make some music but this time round it all looks just a little too artificial to curry much interest. Obviously Kay Cannon and Mike White who developed the screenplay from Mickey Rapkin’s book, have little story to tell here and their plotting is way too hackneyed and unsolicited.

Fashioned as a globetrotting, somewhat intriguingly positioned stylised action thriller, it's definitely ambitious but a misadventure nevertheless. The film begins with the Bellas doing their signature dance-and-harmony bit aboard a mega-yacht and then all hell breaks loose. They manage to jump into the water just before the yatch explodes.

Then the narrative goes back three weeks in time. All of the Bellas are out of college now- Hailee Steinfeld and Emily are struggling while Beca has just quit her job, her roomie, Amy, never had a job and Chloe (Brittany Snow) has her heart set on attending veterinary school. The rest just don’t matter anymore.

The storyline is flimsy, linking one song to another without much to hold it together in between. The numbers are lively but forgettable and the choreography just ends up being repetitive and boring. Much of the comedy here is physical and abrasive so it’s not entirely amiable either. The actors though make it work somewhat especially Kendrick and Wilson, both of whom have the energy and talent to nudge you into a few chuckles.
