Assam batsman Amit Verma continued his love affair with Mumbai when he scored an unbeaten 125 runs to resurrect his side after being down 16-3 to finish with 268-6 at stumps on Day One against Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy Group 'B' match at Bandra-Kurla Complex ground yesterday.
Verma, who earlier plied his trade for Karnataka, came in at No. 4 when Assam were struggling against speedster Sreenath Aravind (5-49). Verma notched up his 11th ton, an innings that was laced with 18 boundaries and one six during his 259-ball stay at the crease. Along with Arun Karthik (35), the duo stitched a fourth-wicket stand of 76.
Verma also played an important role in a 102-run seventh-wicket partnership with Swarupam Purkayastha (56 not out). "Three years ago, when I was playing for Karnataka, I scored 173 against Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium. That was one of my finest knocks. Mumbai had their full side including Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar.
I always enjoy batting in Mumbai. The bounce is really good and the ball comes on really well," Verma, who was dropped on two by substitute fielder Arjun Hoysala off Stuart Binny, said.
