Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin attempted to make peace with former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs days after the Tamil Nadu tweaker took a swipe over the latter's alleged involvement in match fixing.

On Gibbs' 45th birthday yesterday, Ashwin tweeted: "Many more happy returns of the day to @hershybru, have a good one," Ashwin wrote. Gibbs immediately replied. "Thanks bud. Have a good day," he said. However, that was the only positive response Ashwin received from his tweet, which didn't go down well with users on Twitter.

'Uncalled for'
"Mr Gibbs, this guy is fake. Don't spend a second with him. I am from India and I didn't like what he did to you this week. It was uncalled for. He's just lost his place in the team and that is leading to losing his mind as well," a user wrote in reply to Ashwin's tweet.

Another added: "Your sweet tweet won't help now!!! Damage is already done." "Why are you even replying to this third rate guy hershy?" a user wrote. The bitter feud began on Monday after Ashwin tweeted about a shoe brand. Gibbs jokingly replied and said that the shoes would help him run a bit faster. Ashwin did not see the funny side and took a dig at the South African for his involvement in the 2000 match fixing scandal.

Match fixing jibe
"Surely not as fast you did mate, unfortunately, I wasn't as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate," Ashwin had replied. Ashwin later pulled down his 'match fixing' tweet realising that he was turning out to be the butt of all jokes on social media.
