The London-born actress was famed for her roles in 'The Royle Family', 'The Mrs Merton Show' and 'The Fast Show', died at her Greater Manchester home, confirmed her publicist. Aherne had spent much of her life battling c0ancer and other demons, including depression and alcoholism.
Her star's diagnosis with lung cancer marked the third time she confronted the disease — she had a rare cancer of the retina as a child, and later suffered from bladder cancer.
Peter Kessler, a former producer of the Mrs Merton Show, has said he thinks Aherne was "happier before she was successful" and that she found it "very difficult" dealing with her celebrity status.
