Thane builder's suicide: Suraj Parmar had planned suicide by crashing car

Suraj Parmar, the Thane builder who shot himself on October 7, had originally intended to commit suicide in a car crash, his diary revealed. His death brought to light the corruption and red tape that plagues the city’s real estate sector, and it was to generate this kind of awareness that he decided upon a more dramatic suicide.

Parmar’s diary was found in his car, in which he wrote, “I was supposed to kill myself in an accident. But I thought, if I die like this, how will the problems come to the knowledge of the government; so taking the option of suicide.”

After his death, it was discovered that he was depressed and under great strain as his projects were being stalled for permissions. He had also named four corporators who allegedly tried to extort benefits from him, but scratched out their names later.

The diary entry stated: “I failed sir, I now understand, I should have bribed politicians for completion of projects on time. I stood firm when politicians like (names scratched out) were harassing me for bribes, but now feel I did a mistake by not filling their pockets. (Deleted names as they will become enemy to my family.)”

On the basis of this, the police then charged corporators Vikrant Chavan, Hanumant Jagdale, Najeeb Mulla and Sudhakar Chavan for harassing him and abetting his suicide.
