As Aamir Khan gears up to portray a 55-year-old with four adult daughters in his next, we list other A-list Bollywood actors who had no issues playing papa to grown-ups on reel...

Actors generally prefer romancing their heroines in picturesque locales and doing all that it takes to appear as young as possible on screen. At times, they play fathers, but to tiny tots or tweenagers at the most. Many leading stars shy away from being featured as dads to grown-ups, fearing that they might land in a parent-forever trap.

However, things seem to be changing with several A-listers opening up to the idea of playing father to teenagers and adults. They do not mind acting their age or essaying even an older character if that is what the script demands.

Aamir Khan, who is currently prepping for Dangal, will be seen playing father to four grown-up girls in the film inspired by wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained three Commonwealth Games gold medalists — his daughters Geeta and Babita Kumari as well as niece Vinesh. The star has four different looks in Dangal, one of which is of a 55-year-old man. And considering the age, he will have silver streaks in his hair.

Ajay Devgn, 46
His last two films, Action Jackson and Singham Returns, may have depicted him as a volatile character bulldozing anything and everything that dares to cross his path.

In his upcoming film Drishyam, which is the remake of a 2014 Malayalam film of the same name, Devgn turns emotional. He not only plays father to two girls (essayed by newcomers Ishita Dutta and Mrinal Jadhav), but is out to save his family from falling into a trap. The actor apparently had no qualms playing daddy due to the compelling script of the emotional thriller. Shriya Saran, who will be seen on screen after a hiatus, plays Devgn’s wife.

Anil Kapoor, 58
The fit-as-a-fiddle star has hardly aged since the ’90s, when he romanced Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. He may be in his late 50s, but could pass off as a 30-something guy—Arjun Kapoor had once said that his Anil chachu could play his on-screen brother to conviction.

Anil took everyone by surprise when he greenlighted Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do in which he plays father to two of Bollywood’s reigning stars — Priyanka Chopra (32) and Ranveer Singh (29). He even sports salt-and-pepper hair in the film to look like a daddy. Reportedly, his wife Sunita was taken aback when he agreed to take up the role. All these years, Anil always enacted characters far younger to his real age. While Priyanka feels he is Bollywood’s answer to Hollywood hottie George Clooney, Ranveer considers him as his ‘bro’.

Sunny Deol, 58
The ‘dhai kilo ka haath’ fame star is known for essaying brawny, rugged characters. He romanced a 19-year-old Urvashi Rautela in his last outing, Singh Saab The Great (2013).

The 50-something actor, however, in the upcoming sequel of his 1990 hit Ghayal, plays father to a grown-up daughter. Teenager Aanchal Munjal, who was seen in films like We Are Family (2010) and Aarakshan (2011) as well as in TV shows like Ghost Bana Dost and Bade Acche Lagte Hain, has been pencilled to play his on-screen daughter.

Jackie Shroff, 58
Though he has been playing dad for a while now, his decision to play Abhishek Bachchan’s father in Happy New Year made people sit up and take notice.

Jackie will now be seen as Akshay Kumar’s father in Karan Malhotra’s Brothers. Interestingly, the two actors shared screen space in Bhagam Bhaag (2006) when Akki (47) played a theatre artiste and Jackie a cop. Jackie had played Manisha Koirala’s father in Saudagar (1991) and later on, did films with her as his heroine.

She did it too...
Tabu, 43
Known for her unconventional choice of roles, the actress played Shahid Kapoor (34)’s mother in Haider (2014). The actress did have her share of apprehensions and was worried about how people would react.

Director Vishal Bhardwaj had to do a lot of coaxing and cajoling before Tabu gave her nod to the project. It was a big risk for her since Bollywood is known for stereotyping actors. But her powerful performance as the troubled mother in Haider opened up a whole new vista for Tabu who has now bagged diverse roles in upcoming films like Drishyam and Fitoor.
