The crime
Police officials said the accused, who was known to the toddler, lured her took to the first floor of the under-construction building in Chinchwad on Sunday evening. His first attempt failed as the toddler started crying as soon as he made his advances. He then gave her some money and allegedly raped her.
“The girl was playing at the construction site at a time when her mother was indoors. The accused called her and took her to the first floor where he tried to rape her. But as soon as the girl started crying, he gave her Rs 2 and took her to another room on the same floor and allegedly raped her,” API S R Surve of Chinchwad police station said.
Officials said Adivasi knew the victim well as her father was working as a watchman at the site and their residences were located on the same premises, next to each other.
“It was only after the girl started crying that her mother came out to pacify her. She shocked after discovering that something untoward had happened with her daughter. She immediately raised an alarm, following which occupants of the nearby accommodations rushed to her aid and nabbed the accused,” Surve said.
Lesson learnt
To ensure that no unwanted incident occurred at the time Advasi was produced in court, the police fortified the court premises. In the past, a group of woman stormed the court to take on a 62-year-old man who was accused of molesting a 15-year-old girl.
The accused was booked under sections 376 and 366 of the IPC. “He has booked under 376, 2 (F) of the IPC for committing rape on a women under 12 years and 366 (A) kidnapping woman. He got eight days in police custody,” Surve said.u00a0
