Nivedita Basu, Miller House Mumbai
Nivedita Basu, Co-Founder of Miller House Bar & Kitchen, is best known as one of India’s pioneering television and digital content creators who helped shape the country’s iconic saas-bahu era before successfully building three OTT brands Ullu, Atrangi, and HariOm. In 2025, she transitioned her storytelling expertise into hospitality with the launch of Miller House in Khar West, Mumbai. Curated as a cultural hub where old Bombay charm meets modern sensibilities, Miller House reflects Nivedita’s instinct for brand-building, community, and creativity this time told through food, cocktails, music, and experiences.
1. From shaping India’s television era to building OTT brands, what inspired your transition into the F&B and hospitality space?
For me, it never felt like leaving media. I’ve spent over two decades creating stories for television and OTT, and Miller House is just an extension of that. Instead of a screen, I now have a space where stories unfold in real life. People often say, “Oh, you’ve left media, now only hospitality?” and I laugh “Please visit Miller House. You’ll realize it’s very much my media space, just in a different format.” It’s a playground where I’m still exploring storytelling, just through food, cocktails, music, and community.
2. What was the core vision behind Miller House Bar & Kitchen, and how did you bring that vision to life?
I grew up in Dehradun and hill stations, and that vibe stayed with me. So, when we created Miller House, the vision was to bring that hill-station café charm into the heart of Mumbai. Our biggest plus is the balcony and terrace people just want to hang out there, it gives them the feel of a Mussoorie terrace or even a Bangkok rooftop. And even the name Miller came from that imagery. I had a windmill and an open-air space in mind, and that’s how Miller was born. Ironically, as a teetotaler, I didn’t even know there was a beer brand by the same name! But the word stuck, and today Miller is much bigger with new verticals already on the way.

3. How does Miller House blend the nostalgia of old Bombay with modern dining sensibilities?
At Miller House you’ll find the old-world charm retro corners, music, nostalgia but we’ve also made it very Gen Z and Instagram-friendly. Every corner has been designed like a different space, so no matter where you sit, there’s a vibe. It’s where your parents can reminisce about old Bombay while you’re busy doing a Reel. And who would imagine a Bihari food palette in a bar-restaurant in Khar? Yet our Sattu Paratha with Sarson ka Saag has become the bestseller. This philosophy of mixing roots with modern sensibilities will carry forward into Miller Affairs, our second brand launching next month a little more uppity, fine-dine, and experiential.
4. Can you share some of the signature dishes and cocktails that best capture Miller House’s identity?
The hero is definitely the Sattu Paratha with Sarson ka Saag humble, hearty, and totally unexpected on a bar menu. Then there’s the Truffle Mushroom Paratha, Chicken Tikka Chili Cheese Toast, and our Homemade Pastas, which all do really well. For lighter bites, the Miller Pasta Salad and Tropical Sunrise Bowl are Instagram favorites. On the cocktail side, the Old Bombay Martini, Kala Khatta Margarita, and Miller Mule are practically characters in our story.
And what makes it exciting is that our menu is designed to reinvent itself. We’ve kept it on paper so that every four months we refresh it keeping the fast-running basics, adding new dishes based on guest feedback, and tweaking things to suit Gen Z and our regulars. It’s a living, evolving menu that grows with the community.
5. What role do themed events and cultural programming play in shaping the Miller House community?
Miller House is more than F&B, it’s a community-building exercise. Guests don’t ask, “What’s there to eat?” They ask, “What’s happening today?” And that’s the beauty. We’ve become home to dance socials from Bachata nights and Lindy Hop to Jazz sessions and Kizomba evenings. We host coffee raves, open mics, and creative nights that bring together music, art, dance, and theatre. It’s my way of keeping my media touch alive curating experiences where creativity and community meet.

6. How has your experience as a storyteller in television and OTT influenced the way you’ve curated Miller House?
Storytelling is in my DNA. At Miller House, I curate every detail like I would a show the lighting, the music, the plating, the flow of the night. The guest becomes the protagonist, and the evening unfolds like a story. That’s why I say Miller House isn’t just a restaurant; it’s my media playground where I get to tell stories without a script.
7. As an entrepreneur, what challenges did you face while building this brand-new destination in Mumbai?
Hospitality in Mumbai comes with its fair share of challenges from licensing to staffing to making noise in a crowded market. But it helps to have a great partner. UD, my partner, and I share the same vision. We’re not just running a restaurant; we’re building Miller as a brand. It’s been a marriage of dining and creativity, and every challenge has only pushed us to stay true to that.
8. Looking ahead, what is your long-term vision for Miller House, and how do you see it growing as a community hub?
Miller House will continue to be the creative hub the cool, young Gen Z space where food, art, music, and dance collide. But the next chapter is Miller Affairs. If Miller House is your nostalgic adda, soon to be launched Miller Affairs will be the uppity, fine-dine, experiential lounge closer to a Soho or Prithvi with memberships, curated events, and elevated experiences. Together, the two brands will shape the Miller ecosystem: one playful, one refined, both united by community and creativity.
