For many MSMEs and SMEs, reaching the ₹100 crore milestone is an aspiration; sustaining and growing beyond it is the real challenge. Dr. Yogesh Pawar, widely known as the 100Cr Expert Consultant and a leadership strategist, has worked with hundreds of companies at this critical juncture and has seen the patterns that make or break them.

According to him, the three biggest mistakes companies make while scaling are weak management practices, the absence of a strong second-line leadership, and a poor grasp of their product–market universe often coupled with unrealistic optimism about customer acquisition. “It’s a misconception that money is the primary driver for scaling to ₹100 crore. What truly matters is management excellence, the ability to attract talent aligned with the founder’s vision, and building a culture of performance rather than loyalty bias,” he says. While loyalty has its place, he emphasises that competence should take precedence for sustainable growth.

Dr. Yogesh Pawar advocates a six-step framework to scale sustainably: start with a corporate deck rooted in the company’s vision, mission, and values; align strategies with that foundation; initiate special actions that impact cost, price, availability, and selection; define governance structures; establish methods for employee development; and measure every department’s output against the organisational vision. Through this disciplined approach, organisations not only grow revenue with profitability but also ensure they retain the scale they achieve.

A recurring theme in his work is the importance of resilient and innovative cultures. Founders, he notes, must embody the values they set, inspire teams with a vision of the future, and practise active listening. Leaders who distance themselves from their frontline risk losing touch with reality. Equally important is the art of asking the right questions, ones that challenge teams to solve real problems rather than explaining solutions from the top down.

In resource-constrained environments, he recommends integrating design thinking into everyday decisions. This begins with empathising to distinguish between customer needs, wants, and desires, followed by gathering feedback from all stakeholders, and engaging in collective brainstorming, an exercise that not only sharpens ideas but also builds conviction in co-creators and, ultimately, in the market.

Looking ahead, Dr. Pawar sees several shifts MSME leaders must prepare for over the next five years: automating all repetitive tasks, simplifying processes while empowering teams with autonomy, mastering the interplay between financial numbers and emotional impact, and making data-backed decisions grounded in global perspectives rather than instinct alone.

At the heart of his philosophy lies the work of the School of Inspirational Leadership (SIL), which he founded a decade ago to transform the management and mindset practices of Indian MSMEs. Over the years, SIL has completed more than 500 consulting projects, helping companies cross the ₹100 crore milestone, with over 200 surpassing ₹500 crore and around 10 reaching ₹1,000 crore. Its approach is rooted in execution consulting, working alongside founders to implement strategies rather than just prescribing them. The team, comprising former CXOs and seasoned business leaders, is trained extensively in SIL’s rigorous internal coaching frameworks.

“We are building our clients’ dreams, and no one has the right to play with them. Every strategy we agree on must be executed to deliver results,” Dr. Pawar says firmly. It is this commitment to practical, hands-on execution that, he believes, turns growth into a sustainable legacy.
