Udaipur-based Oltao is redefining smart, energy-efficient ceiling fans in India- blending design, tech, and local manufacturing power.
Oltao
In 2019, when Mehul Soni borrowed ₹4.6 lakh to start a ceiling fan company from his hometown of Udaipur, few could have predicted the scale his vision would eventually reach. Today, Oltao is not just another name in the appliance market - it is a fast-growing design-driven brand delivering over a thousand premium ceiling fans every month to customers across India.
At just 31, Mehul has built Oltao into a national name by doing what many would consider improbable: keeping both R&D and now full-fledged manufacturing operations based in the southern Rajasthan city more famous for its palaces and lakes than industrial prowess. “Innovation doesn’t need a metro pin code,” Mehul says. “We believed a small-town brand could make a big impact - and we’ve proven it.”
A New Spin on Local Manufacturing
Oltao’s growth story is as much about entrepreneurship as it is about decentralised development. The company’s 30,000 sq ft plant in Udaipur now employs over 90% first-time industrial workers, many of whom previously had limited job prospects. One of them is Hemant Thakur, who once considered moving to a metro city for work. “I used to think I’d leave Udaipur for a job,” he says. “Instead, the job came to me.”
The company’s reliance on the local ecosystem has had a ripple effect. Former artisans who once crafted leather goods for tourists now work with CNC machines, assembling BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motors or machining lightweight aluminium hubs. This strategic repurposing of skills and infrastructure has helped drive down production costs while increasing employment in districts where graduate unemployment hovers around 15%.
Engineering Meets Aesthetics
Oltao isn’t just an employment success story - it’s a design and innovation powerhouse. Unlike traditional ceiling fans, Oltao products blend cutting-edge technology with aesthetic elegance. The company’s signature line-up includes fans like Oltao Nova Wall Fans, known for its ultra-quiet BLDC motor and minimalist design, and the Chandelier Fan, which offers Wi-Fi and app-based control via Google Assistant and Alexa. All fans are energy-efficient, consuming only 35 watts - nearly 65% less than conventional fans - and feature high torque, low noise, and long-lasting brushless motors.
“Fans haven’t changed much in decades, but user expectations have,” Mehul explains. “People want more than air circulation - they want efficiency, smart features, and good design. That’s where Oltao comes in.”
All Oltao fans are equipped with remote controls, timer features, and inverter stabilization, making them ideal for modern Indian homes, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where voltage fluctuations are common.
From Boutique Brand to Nationwide Reach
Oltao’s journey has been largely organic. Without celebrity endorsements or splashy campaigns, the brand has grown through word of mouth, strategic online presence, and a sharp focus on customer experience. Available via its own website (www.oltao.in), marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart, and select offline retail partners, the company now serves customers in all states across India.
“Our growth has been driven by trust and repeat buyers,” Mehul says. “We’ve had customers who bought one fan and came back to replace all fans in their homes with Oltao. That kind of loyalty is rare - and precious.”
Built in Udaipur, Designed for India
Even as demand scales, Mehul remains committed to Udaipur as the company’s base. “Building here wasn’t the easy route, but it gave us more control over quality, culture, and innovation,” he says. He also credits the city’s serene pace and creative energy as the ideal backdrop for a design-focused brand.
The brand has also begun pilot testing of solar-powered fan variants and integrated IoT solutions - another sign that Oltao isn’t content with just competing, but leading.
A Model for Future-Ready Manufacturing
As India pushes toward decentralised economic growth and “Viksit Bharat 2047,” Oltao stands as a compelling model for how small-town innovation can have national - and even global - implications. The company is already in talks with partners in the Middle East and Africa for exports, signaling the next phase of its growth story.
“Our journey is proof that world-class products can be made in Udaipur, by locals, for the world,” Mehul reflects.
From a borrowed ₹4.6 lakh to a recognised name in India’s premium home appliances market, Oltao’s journey underscores the potential of small-town dreams backed by big vision. In a country teeming with innovation hubs, Mehul Soni and his team have quietly created one of their own - right in the heart of Rajasthan.
