INTERVIEW WITH KSHITIJ KAPIL

Interviewer: Kshitij, your recent recognition at IndieX for “The Night The Sky Fell,” where you earned the Outstanding Achievement Award in Cinematography amid a festival that has honored celebrated names in the industry, speaks to the strength of your visual storytelling. How did the demands and prestige of IndieX influence your creative approach to this project?

Kshitij Kapil: IndieX was a festival we had been closely following. It's a respected platform known for bringing together a diverse group of creative individuals to network and celebrate their work. I had friends who previously screened their films at IndieX, and they consistently spoke highly of the quality of the projects and the talented people involved. I knew the competition would be tough; many of the films are crafted by seasoned industry professionals, so I made sure to approach our project with great care. Every shot was thoughtfully composed, and every story beat was carefully considered to ensure we visually conveyed our vision.

One of our biggest strengths during production was our preparation. We spent nearly three months developing the story, testing different cameras, lenses, and lighting styles to establish the film's look in advance. We were also fortunate to have repeated access to our location, which allowed us to run on-site tests and fine-tune our approach. Every element of the film was deliberately and meticulously crafted to support the final result. I truly believe that the more time you invest in pre-production, the stronger your final product will be.

Interviewer: Films like “Top of The Game: The Story of Rheta West” and “Broken Art” have brought you honors at the Los Angeles Cinefest and Miami Independent Film Festival. How do these early achievements shape your process now, especially after also winning the esteemed Golden Remi Award at WorldFest-Houston—a festival known for launching careers of legends like Spielberg and Ang Lee?

Kshitij Kapil: Each of these festivals carries a rich legacy, and being a part of that history is truly humbling. After spending six years studying film, the opportunity to screen my work at venues where some of my greatest inspirations once began is incredibly meaningful. It fills me with pride, but more importantly, it fuels my drive to keep creating.

Festivals like these offer so much more than just a screening opportunity. They expose you to a wide range of films and genres, many of which you might not encounter elsewhere. This can help broaden your creative perspective. It's also an invaluable chance to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. Being surrounded by such talent and passion is both inspiring and a reminder of how much we can grow through collaboration and shared experiences. It's because of festivals like these that I have continued to grow as a cinematographer and as an artist.

Interviewer: Your cinematography on “Superdad” earned recognition at the Academy Award-qualifying Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. How do such high-pressure, competitive environments influence your work on a technical and creative level?

Kshitij Kapil: As a cinematographer, I don't focus too much on aiming for specific festivals during production. There are no guarantees when it comes to festival selections, and not every festival is the right match for every film. My priority is to visually interpret the story and create the experience to match.

I also lead a camera and lighting team, so a big part of my job is making sure everyone is on the same page, technically and creatively. That means ensuring a safe, collaborative environment on set, communicating clearly about lighting setups, camera movement, lens choices, and making sure our visual language is in sync with the director’s vision.

When everyone is aligned and contributing their best work toward a unified goal, I know we’re creating something strong. I have full confidence in the team and the story we’re helping to bring to life. From there, I trust that the visual experience we’ve crafted will connect with audiences, regardless of the platform or festival.

Interviewer: With “The Night The Sky Fell” now a standout at both IndieX and BIFF LA—platforms credited with showcasing future cinematic stars—how does this moment feel as you see your work recognized alongside internationally renowned creators?

Kshitij Kapil: It is both humbling and energizing. Having my work highlighted where so many industry leaders have launched their journeys pushes me to continue taking creative risks and telling bold stories. It also shows to me how much I have grown over the years, as well as where the path ahead leads. I have a strong team around me, and we are now naturally looking to take the next leap forward, which is working on feature films and getting them out to audiences.

Interviewer: Thank you for sharing your journey, Kshitij, and congratulations for continuing to shape the world of cinematography.

Kshitij Kapil: Thank you. I look forward to evolving with each story and contributing to cinema’s ever-changing landscape.
