Why Access Matters: Inside Hinduja Family’s Vision for Inclusive Health Services

Hinduja Family’s

Access to quality healthcare is not only a fundamental right. It forms the basis for an equitable society. Its need is not only evident in India but also in other parts of the world, where one’s socioeconomic status dictates access to healthcare and the availability of specific health services. The UK’s richest Hinduja family views health care as more than just a service industry. It is a lifetime dedication based on shared progress, dignity, and compassion.

As a family of Indian origin with a global outlook, the Hindujas have long believed that a meaningful legacy must be built on the well-being of people. Their consistent investments in access to healthcare, through formal medical institutions and community initiatives facilitated by Hinduja Foundation, are indicative of this belief.

Hospitals with Purpose and Principles

The Hinduja family's contribution to Indian healthcare is anchored in three hospitals. Each has a profound commitment to quality-conscious care. These healthcare facilities have been established in alignment with the vision of the founder, the late Mr Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, who believed that education and healthcare are fundamental rights for all.

The P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre in Mahim, Mumbai, is a 520-bed tertiary care hospital that has been caring for patients in Bombay since 1951. Known for its clinical expertise, research capabilities, and training programs, it has earned the trust of generations of patients across India and abroad.

In 2011, another branch of P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre was was established in Khar, Mumbai. This 150-bed multi-speciality facility offers advanced surgical procedures, diagnostics, and a personalised approach to treatment. It was built to expand quality care into previously underserved areas of the city.

Down south in Sampangiramnagar, in Bengaluru, the P. D. Hinduja Sindhi Hospital contributes to the healthcare vision of the Hinduja Family. Catering to community needs, with around 100 services spanning surgical, orthopaedic, and neurological specialities, this hospital is a new landmark for towns with limited financial capacity.

What distinguishes these hospitals is not their clinical offerings or even the infrastructure, but rather the values of the services provided. The Hinduja Family has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to maintaining a non-profit status in all its medical ventures. This principle will determine how to expand in the future where care will never be compromised because of the commercial interests, and affordability will always remain a priority.

Healthcare Where It Matters Most

Even though hospitals are essential, the Hinduja Foundation recognises that access often breaks down in rural and underserved areas. To address this issue, the foundation has implemented several impactful, community-based health care initiatives. One of the foundation’s main initiatives has been the use of mobile medical units for rural communities. These units deliver primary care, maternal and child health services, and basic diagnostics to villages that often lack even a single clinic. Hundreds of free medical camps have also been organised to address chronic health issues like anaemia, hypertension, and cataracts.

A collaboration with Hinduja Leyland Finance in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu recently deployed solar-powered water ATMs in three government schools. Now, over 1,000 students have access to clean drinking water every day, benefiting their health and attendance at school.

The foundation also made strides in preventive care. In Mumbai, breast cancer screening camps for policewomen and female municipal workers brought early detection to women who don’t typically seek out regular examinations. These programs are designed not only to treat, but also to serve educational purposes and empower women.

Prakash Hinduja, Managing Trustee of the Hinduja Foundation, explains this approach with clarity and precision.

“Building or supporting hospitals is only one aspect of healthcare access. The goal is to show up where people are most at risk. That’s where quality health care begins.”

A Shared Responsibility Across Generations

Philanthropy within the Hinduja Family is not seen as a choice. It is regarded as a responsibility to be shared and passed on. Prakash Hinduja’s son, Ajay Hinduja, is a member of the foundation’s steering committee and brings a renewed sense of focus to the work at hand.

Swiss resident Ajay Hinduja reflects on this sense of purpose.

“My father has always said that true business success is measured by how many lives you uplift, not just how many markets you reach. For us, access to healthcare is not a project. It is a principle that all Hinduja Family members live by.”

To improve healthcare delivery in India’s most isolated and inaccessible regions, the foundation is exploring the use of digital health tools, remote diagnostics, and teleconsultation platforms. The goal is not only to treat illness but to create systems that prevent it from taking root in the first place.

Prakash Hinduja adds his perspective.

“The job that we do in health care is not just one philanthropic initiative. It is continuity. It is a manifestation of our values, our roots in India and our obligation to our people.”

Ajay Hinduja reinforces this with a forward-looking view.

“We see healthcare as part of a larger human development vision. It is linked to education, nutrition, clean water, and gender equality. Investing in health is investing in the future.”

A Model for Meaningful Change

Whether in operating rooms in Mumbai or outreach vans in Tamil Nadu, the healthcare work of the Hinduja Family has been based on a deep and abiding promise to serve. It is not motivated by any desire for recognition or honour, but rather by their firmly held belief that no individual should be deprived of care based on where they were born or how much they earn.

Today, as healthcare delivery in India continues to be compromised, the Hinduja Foundation demonstrates a model of care based on values. Their service-oriented commitment to nonprofit healthcare ensures that compassion is never overshadowed by commerce.

Access to healthcare, for the Hinduja Family, is not a question of scale or strategy. It is a principle that should remain unchanged.
