What's it about : Titanic couple Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunite to bring to life, the Richard Yates novel. Set in the 1950s the film follows the lives of golden couple Frank (Leo) and April (Kate) as they set out to realise the American dream. It shows suburban angst and the frustrations the couple face as they want to add more meaning and grandeur to their lives. Happy from the outside, but hollow within, both Frank and April try hard to plaster on their best smiles and pretend everything is okay even though their inner world is crumbling. Mendes captures the disappointments and tragedy of that era through the eyes of Frank and April.
What's hot: Even though they aren't Jack and Rose anymore, Leo and Kate light up the screen the moment they appear in the frame. Even though Kate has some of the best lines (with the director being her husband!) and scenes, Leo impresses as Frank who struggles to move from being an average middle class American to salvaging his family life. Mendes has dealt with a similar theme in American Beauty, but here he addresses it in a different setting. However, the film wouldn't have worked had it not been for the apt casting.u00a0

What's not: The film takes a toll on you with its dark mood. After a while, all the empathy you feel for Kate vanishes into nothingness as she continues her tirade against life and expecting so much out of it. The feelings and issues raised in the film are irrelevant in today's time, so watching Kate and Leo fight it out leaves you perplexed and baffled.
What to do: If you get off watching the frustrations of a middle aged couple, nothing beats American Beauty. Revolutionary Road comes off as a wannabe American Beauty in a different time setting.
