Bappida sets a score

The FIFA fever seems to have gripped the nation, even though, like always, India's not going to be participating in it. But composer and singer Bappida has a 'goal' in mind: That we should work on becoming a soccer nation in the next five years. The only Indian to have composed a single for the FIFA Cup that starts tomorrow, he dazzles us with his love for the sport, and not his gold for once:

On a song
I'm so excited about the World Cup that I've released a single, Football Football Fever, which I have written, composed and sung. Being a big soccer buff, my enthusiasm just had to translate into music. The song is catchy and reflects the vibe and energy of the sport. It is unfortunate that India hasn't qualified for the World Cup but I hope that the scene is going to change in the future. Considering that we have world champions in the field of cricket, hockey, chess, tennis, you name it, it is time that we got an intimidating soccer team in place too.

Just for kicks
I think Bollywood too needs to pay a little more attention to the sport. There have been films made on cricket and hockey, but soccer hasn't been our film industry's favourite sport. I remember working with Dev Anand and Aamir Khan in Awwal Number, a film based on cricket. That was one deadly film, with two of Bollywood's most sought-after actors. I would love to see a similar film being made on soccer.

Having a ball
Most Bengalis love soccer, so I'm no exception. In fact Bhaichung Bhutia is like a brother to me. We often discuss the sport together. This year, like always, I will be cheering for Brazil. And if they make it to the semi-finals, I have all intentions of going to South Africa to watch them live. As of now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But having said that, as my song goes, Brazil ho ya Germany, Italy ho ya England, Argentina ho ya France, football se hai romance.
