Jewellery designer Poonam Soni has reason to celebrate. A piece of jewellery designed by her will soon be auctioned along with the world's top most 36 jewellery brands and designers by the chairman of the auction home of Sothebys himself. The only designer to represent India, Poonam has been invited by guest curator Margowski to take part in the annual auction of eco-art, a charity organization supported by Prince Albert II.

Bird watching
Poonam's piece is a brooch cum lariat inspired by the Saker Falcon as the theme was 'extinct birds'. In her characteristic style of using mixed mediums, she has mounted the bird with champagne and oval diamonds of various shapes, a traditional Moghal art piece, rare pearl and a green painting depicting the environment.

Dynamic collaboration
Poonam Soni has always been a stand alone brand, but this time she has collaborated with the best in technical expertise to make her piece world-class. Fine Jewellery India Ltd is a leader in this field, a Rs 250 crore company headed by Prem Kothari and established in 1988.

All that glitters
Titled Itai Doshin, based on the Buddhist philosophy which means 'many in body, one in mind,' the piece is adorned with diamonds of the highest quality, champagne coloured ovals in rounds and bagets. Fancy shaped, golf cut white diamonds on the wings of the bird and uneven shaped large white diamonds are used for the flowers and drops from the wings. The bird's stomach is decorated in a traditional form of Mogul art, while the face of the bird is hand-painted. However, it is the miniature rose holding the tiny green painting on plexiglass, below the bird, that exudes the environmental vibe. The piece took a good four-and-a-half months to take its glittering shape.

Around the world
The jewel, which will go on a world tour, will end with an auction at Abu Dhabi under the patronage of Sheikh Al Nahyan during the Grand Prix finale. "It is exciting to be able to stand with the world's best and leave your mark there," Says Poonam. "French designers were sought after by our Royalty and I always nurtured a dream to design for French Royalty. This is as close as it can get! And Sotheby's is a dream come true!" Her piece will open at an auction price of Rs 22 lakhs. Well the lady has done us proud and we hope her piece goes at the highest bid creating a milestone in Indian Jewellery.
