He not only organised free concerts during the first month of lockdown but also helped create Jayatu Jayatu Bharatam with ISRA (Indian singer's rights association) were 111 singers sang for the PM cares fund. Sonu was one of the curators for the project. He was also part of 'Sangeet Setu' a concert for PM cares Foundation where singers performed for 3 days and it was seen by 54 crore people all over.

Sonu's efforts were recognised by the jury committee of the prestigious 'Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar' award and he was awarded by Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari at his residence, Raj Bhavan at a ceremony held on November 7, 2020.

A source close to Sonu says, "The pandemic changed our lives completely and the world needed people to step up and rise to the occasion. Sonu was deeply affected by what was happening in the country and the havoc that Covid-19 created, he wanted something that could in any way ease the pain and suffering of the people. From organising online concerts to curating shows to support the PM cares foundation, Sonu extended a helping hand and the jury members took note of all the relief work he was doing. Since we still are not out of the pandemic, I hope this will encourage more people to come out and help those in need."

Nigam, who received the award on November 7th at Raj Bhavan, continues to go on with his relief efforts and believes we all should try to help others in any way we can.
