Irrfan Khan

Here are 11 lesser-known facts about the late Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan Death Anniversary 2024: He was one of the most acclaimed and sought-after actors in the Indian film industry who left a stellar mark with his powerful performances even in Hollywood. Best known for films like 'Maqbool', 'Paan Singh Tomar', 'The Lunchbox', 'Piku' among several others, Irrfan was a gem of an actor who used to keep the audiences hooked to the silver screen with his superlative acting skills. While the legendary star, Irrfan, is no longer with us, let's take a look at 11 lesser-known facts about him as we remember the 'King of Acting' on his death anniversary.  Fact 1 We all know that the late Irrfan Khan has been an actor beyond compare and will always be considered as a testimony to superlative acting skills. But, did you know that, more than acting, Irrfan Khan always had dreamt of becoming a cricketer, as per reports. Fact 2 Bollywood actors changing their original names to adopt a screen name is pretty common. Irrfan Khan’s full name is Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan, which he had shortened it to ‘Irrfan Khan’. Fact 3 While we all know that Irrfan Khan belonged to Bollywood and vice versa, did you know that Irrfan Khan’s native is a village named Tonk in Jaipur. Fact 4 Films like Mira Nair’s 'Salaam Bombay' and others made Irrfan Khan one of the fine-crafted pillars of Bollywood. Speaking of 'Salaam Bombay', did you know that, while he was offered the role in the film ‘Salaam Bombay', he was studying in his third year at NSD (National School of Drama). Not the one to say no to challenging roles, Irrfan Khan agreed to do the role. The rest, as they say, is ‘his-story’. There is also one more interesting trivia about the film. It's being said that, even though Mira Nair had signed him for the role in the film, his role was eventually cut short because of his tall height! The irony of the situation is that, despite all this, Irrfan Khan ‘stood tall’ in the film!   Fact 5 We all know about the extremely prestigious TFCA (Toronto Film Critics Association Award). What many may not know is that, the late Irrfan Khan’s widely acclaimed film 'Lunch Box' is the only Indian movie till date to have got a TFCA award! Fact 6 Who will ever say no to a Christopher Nolan film... not even in the wildest of dreams! Well, if the reports are to be believed, then, Irrfan Khan had turned down a film that was offered to him by Nolan! And the reason for the refusal will make you fall in love with Irrfan Khan over and over again. Its being said that, even though he was keen to do the Hollywood sci-fi film ‘Interstellar’, he had to turn it down because of his prior commitment to ‘The Lunchbox’ and ‘D-Day’ and that him saying yes to the film would have wanted him to stay in foreign land for four months! Doesn’t that make you go ‘awwwww’ about Irrfan Khan! Fact 7 You will be surprised to know that Irrfan Khan had landed in Mumbai after having done the training of air conditioning. And his job as an AC technician also got him to visit the house of the superstar (late) Rajesh Khanna to get his air conditioner repaired. Fact 8 Not many know that the Hollywood actress Natalie Portman and Irrfan Khan had once been casted together in Mira Nair’s film ‘Kosher Vegetarian’. The film was about a love story between a Gujarati man and a Jewish girl. Fact 9 Even though he did not ‘look’ that tall, the fact is that, the height of Irrfan Khan was 6 feet 1 inch! Fact 10 During an Oscar awards ceremony, Hollywood’s much-acclaimed actress Julia Roberts had once come up to him and complimented him for his acting in ‘The Namesake’. Fact 11 Did you know that the late Irrfan Khan’s father ran a tyre business?

International Dance Day 2024: Legendary choreographers of Bollywood

Every year, April 29 is celebrated as International Dance Day. It marks the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. This day aims to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form across all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance. Some call it artistic expression while others view it as a stress-buster. 'Dance' can be defined as body movements in sync and a celebration of physicality.  Bollywood, which is the epitome of larger-than-life performances has used dance as a means of storytelling. While actors execute iconic numbers breathing life into still, it is the choreographers who have worked hard behind the scenes to make it happen. Here’s a list of some legendary dance masters who have and continue to rule showbiz.  Saroj Khan  Saroj Khan joined the industry at the age of three. Her last work was with her frequent collaborator and actor Madhuri Dixit in the multi-starrer 'Kalank'. Remo D’Souza While Remo has choreographed several songs in films, it was his television stint as a judge on the reality show 'Dance India Dance' that got him fame. From choreography, he ventured into direction and made his debut with the comedy film 'F.A.L.T.U'. He then got his skill sets as a dance master to the forefront and directed the film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance which featured Prabhu Deva. This was followed by ABCD 2 with Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, and 'Street Dancer 3D'. Padmaavat to Jab We Met, movies that celebrate diverse dance forms

Bollywood has been a place of diversity when it comes to its dancing. The music is the life of movies, and dance is the heart of the songs. As we celebrate International Dance Day, here are a few movie songs that cherish different dance forms. Jab We Met- Bhangra - 'Nagada Nagada' Jab We Met is one of the most loved movies of all time. The Imtiaz Ali directorial went on to become a classic, while the movie's song has a separate fan base altogether. One of the songs that instantly became everyone’s favourite was 'Nagada Nagada' - the Punjabi track quickly got picked by the audience who loved it for Geet aka Kareena Kapoor and Aditya aka Shahid Kapoor's Bhangra moves. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela - Garba - 'Nagade Sang Dhol' Garba is one of the most popular dance forms in the country. This form has been appreciated in Bollywood through several songs, one of the most popular being 'Nagade Sang Dhol' from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela. This song shows Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the members of two rival Gujarati families, dancing their hearts out to the Garba beats. Padmaavat - Ghoomar - 'Ghoomar' Ghoomar is a well-known dance form, widely recognized in Rajasthan. The folk dance is about taking multiple rounds in one go. This dance form was used by Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his historical drama Padmaavat. Deepika Padukone, who portrays the role of Rani Padmavati in the film, dances to the Ghoomar song royally and grandly. Devdas- Classical - ‘Dola Re Dola' Classical is yet another widely recognized dance form in Bollywood songs. There have been several songs from 'Inhi Logon Ne' to 'Maar Dala,' which have an essence of classical dancing. 'Dola Re Dola' is yet another example of the use of classical dancing in a Bollywood song. The choreography of the song was something different as it was a mix of Indian classical dance forms. The form of dance that Saroj Khan explored with 'Dola Re Dola' is called Nautwary. It included steps of Kathak and Bharatanatyam. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani- Freestyle - 'Ghagra' Freestyle is usually used in every other song in the industry. This dance form basically has no such rules and is a mix of all. One of the best examples of Freestyle is 'Ghagra' from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The song has Ranbir Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit showing their sizzling chemistry and energetic dance moves. With a touch of traditional and modern steps, 'Ghagra' fits perfectly into a Freestyle dance.

Mahadev betting app case: Mumbai Crime Branch detains 'Style' actor Sahil Khan

In a significant development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Mumbai Crime Branch has detained actor Sahil Khan in connection with the Mahadev betting app case. Khan was apprehended on Saturday from Chhattisgarh, where he had reportedly been evading authorities for nearly 40 hours. His attempts to secure a pre-arrest bail failed as the Bombay High Court rejected his plea. Khan had fled Mumbai, constantly changing his location to evade authorities. The actor stands accused of running a betting site and promoting illegal betting activities. His name surfaced during the investigation of the Mehadev betting app case by the Matunga Police in Mumbai. The saga began in December 2023 when the SIT of the Mumbai cyber cell issued a summons to Sahil Khan and three others, directing them to appear before the authorities for questioning. However, Khan failed to comply with the summons, prompting intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend him. The alleged size of the scam is estimated to be around Rs 15,000 crore, as per the first information report (FIR) filed in the case. Notably, one of the chief accused, Ravi Uppal, was detained in Dubai last year by local authorities based on a red corner notice issued by Interpol at the behest of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Sahil Khan, known for his roles in films like 'Style' and 'Excuse Me', has transitioned into the fitness industry in recent years, working as a fitness expert and founder of Divine Nutrition, a company specializing in fitness supplements such as whey protein, creatine, and muscle gainers.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. A still from Dangal

Aamir Khan says despite being a Muslim, he understood the power of Namaste

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, whose 2016 film 'Dangal' remains one of the highest-grossing movies at the box office, recalled how he understood the power of Namaste while shooting for it in Punjab. The actor who appeared as one of the guests on ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ hosted by Kapil Sharma shared an interesting anecdote while filming the Nitesh Tiwari directorial.  ‘Dangal’ was based on India's first female wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari and their father Mahaveer Singh Phogat. Besides Aamir, it also featured Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra.  During the show, which streams on Netflix, Aamir shared, "This is a story which is very close to me. We shot for 'Rang de Basanti' in Punjab, and I really loved it there. The people, the Punjabi culture... people are so full of love. So, when we went for the shoot of 'Dangal,' it was a small village we were shooting in. We shot for more than two months in that location and that house." He further said, "You won't believe it, but when I used to reach there at around 5 or 6 in the morning, as my car entered, people would stand outside their homes just to welcome me with folded hands and 'Sat Sri Akaal.' They used to just wait and welcome me. They never disturbed me, never stopped my car, nothing. After my pack-up, when I would return, they would again be standing outside their homes and would greet me 'Good Night.'" Aamir asserted that being a Muslim he was not used to saying Namaste. "I belong to a Muslim family, I am not used to folding my hands in 'Namaste.' I'm used to raising my hand (gestures adaab, commonly used by Muslims to greet) and bowing my head. After spending those two and a half months in Punjab, I understood the power of 'Namaste.' It's such a wonderful emotion," the actor concluded.  Meanwhile, on the film front, as a producer, Aamir is coming up with 'Lahore 1947', which stars Sunny Deol in the lead role. It is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, and Ali Fazal are also part of the film. He also has ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ with Darsheel Safary.

The actress is best known for her TV show – ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ – as well as her acting chops in films such as ‘Super 30’, ‘Batla House’, ‘Ghost Stories’, ‘Jersey’, and ‘Sita Ramam’, which has developed a massive fan following across the globe.
